Up until July 14, 1976, Canada used the death penalty.  The method they used was HANGING!

Over 1,400 Canadians were executed.

In 1987, a vote to bring back the death penalty was introduced, but the motion was defeated  by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

In order to alleviate the congestion in many prisons (as seen in the movie 13th), should Canada re-instate the death penalty?

Explain.

  1. I think this is a good and bad idea at the same time. This will be the solution to over population in jails but also the death penalty had to have some rules. Like you can't be giving someone the death penalty if there only going to jail for 3 to 4 years. So all in all I think that she should bring this back but to a certain extent.

    1. Yeah you're right about the amount of people in these jails but they can make a jail for the people who did extreme things.

  2. I think that the death penalty should be reinstated for people that have killed more than one occasion cause some people kill someone because they are in a situation that if they don’t kill the person they will die and is the only way to save themselves. Ok they can shoot the person's shoulder to disable them from using their weapon but you don’t time to think you just have do what can save you. And for people that do really bad stuff like rape deserve a second chance.

    1. I agree when you say it should be for people who kill more than once.

  3. I agree some what with you I say only people that have killed should deserve the death sentence.

  4. The Death penalty is a very serious subject to talk about. This killed so many people. Some, who were guilty and some, who were innocent.
If the death penalty was banned the first time it was for a reason. It isn't a good method in executing someone. You are punishing them for killing someone or doing a bad deed but at the same time the person who will be performing this event will be doing the exact same thing, they just have the right to do so. You're taking someone's life away. Even if it isn't the best life they still have the right to live. If they did something very bad and deserve a punishment the head office can figure something out to make them suffer enough for what they did. I find that if we bring back and accept the death penalty once more it's going to cause chaos and that's not what we want here in this life that is hard enough.

    1. I agree , if Canada does re-instate the death penalty law it would cause a lot of chaos.

  5. Canada shouldn't re-instate the death penalty law. Their is a reason why the death penalty law was ridden . It's wrong and terrible . Someone shouldn't pay the price by death . No one deserves to die , not even the worst criminals . I know that the number of criminals has grew since half a decade ago but it's mostly due to drugs . And should someone be killed for selling drugs ? I don't think so . If someone becomes a murderer they shouldn't die but instead stay in jail , forever . If the death penalty comes back it would cause so much trouble and pain , so I don't believe it should be re-instated ever .

  6. I strongly disagree with the death penalty law. I think that even the people that have committed the worst crimes in the world should not be killed because we are all humans and should be treated equally. I think that a life sentence in prison is enough because its not like their getting out of jail they are going to die in there so theres not really a point of just killing them right away. I find in a way prison is even more of a punishment because you have to suffer and be locked up behind bars, in a tiny cell for the rest of your life and theres nothing you can do about it. I also believe that the main reason why their just deciding to kill people is because they don't have enough space in jails. That really is not how you solve the problem. I think that the government should stop spending money on other stupid things and solve the prison issue by putting our and their money towards building new prisons for everyones safety.

  7. Yes I do believe we should reinstate the death penalty. If someone kills someone they deserve to die. Keeping prisoners alive costs tax payers and the government so much money. They take up lots of space and they really don't deserve to breath the air we breath when they took that right away from somebody else.I believe it makes the families feel better who have to watch these people get to live, eat, read, everything that they destroyed for their innocent victims. I strongly believe if you kill someone you should pay the price with your life.

  8. Honestly, I disagree with this death penalty law because I find it just so wrong. Like even if the person did something really bad, doesn't mean that they have to be killed. They can be just sentenced to life in prison. These people are killing felons because they simply don't have space for the new prisoners. Canada shouldn't have the death penalty law.

  9. This tough because if Canada reinstates the death penalty there will still be lots of problems. Sometimes people are put in jail for 20 years until the judge realizes he was was not guilty. Everyone that kills someone has a problem and I believe everyone is born good but as a child they see things and they think it's okay to do illegal things. To be in jail for the rest of your life is so painful cause you'll never have freedom again.

  10. I think its a good idea because if you kill someone and have like your whole life in jail it'd be better to kill your self in 20 seconds than staying in a jail for your whole life. But might be bad if your were framed than killed right away before someone proved you innocent or something.

  11. I don't think Canada should re-instate the death penalty. I think killing people is just cruel and wrong although they've done terrible things. I believe no one is born evil, they've just experienced things that might have led to commit crimes. I'm not saying committing crimes is okay, all I'm saying is that they should pay for what they've done even if its staying in jail for the rest their lives but the answer is not killing them.

  12. I don't Canada should re-instate the death penalty, sure it would help with over population of prison's but I just don't see the point of it, if someone commits a crime they should have to do the time, i'm sure spending the rest of your life in jail is more of a punishment then the death penalty since you suffer more and you end up dying in jail anyways so it's pretty much the same, and if you get framed for something you could mistakenly get executed when you've done nothing wrong, and i'm sure it's better to spend 5 to 10 years in prison and be let free then get the death penalty.

  13. I don't really think this would be a good idea for say once you are on death penalty you can't get out of it but what if they find evidence that you aren't guilty. The death penalty would be smart though for the people that commit crimes like rape, murder, etc. Things like robbery and those types of crimes they should just be put in jail

  14. I think Canada should not re-instate the death penalty because Canada is a free country. If they re-instate the death penalty, then Canada isn't a free country anymore. Our justice isn't precise enough for us to use the death penalty or else, many innocent will die for a mistake in the trial. Plus, it's brutal to kill someone. No one when want to see or kill a person die. A death penalty is for robbery and small crimes is a bit over the top for a punishment. Plus, this is the 21st century, we have learned and evolved from the 15st century. We don't have to repeat the past. This is the century where we can change.

  15. I disagree because our justice system isn't precise enough. Many innocent will get killed while some guilty will escape.

  16. No I don't think that it would be a good idea because if you are on the death penalty you can't get out of it and even if you didn't anything wrong you're still on it. I think that people that commit crimes should just be put into jail because it's bad enough.

  17. I think that it would be a good idea because for example if someone murders someone on purpose, they just go to jail and still won't get a true punishment. I feel if you take someone's life then you shall be taken from your own. I know Canada is a free country and jail is terrible to be in, especially for years, but I feel that if that person has the right to kill someone then walk on our streets later on is unacceptable! But obviously there would be a lot of questions going around because once you are on the death penalty and you didn't actually commit the crime, then it would be controversial.

  18. No I don't think Canada should bring back the death penalty because I think people will go crazy if they here the death penalty in back. Because people don't want to die and if it's for killing a person it's more miserable staying in jail then getting killed. People will start riots if it comes back and Canada will fall apart like the United States.

  19. I don’t know how I feel about re-instating the death penalty because a lot of times people could be innocent and not deserve to die. However it depends on what the person does, if they kill someone than they deserve to be killed because you took away someone’s life, you took someone away from their family and now you have to accept the consequences. It might be intense to have to kill someone but prison provides them with food, water, weights, etc. However acts like robbing and other things should be allowed to live in my opinion.

  20. I do not think it should be reinstated because this is a cruel punishment, but on the other hand if you sentenced for life and the person asked to be exquisite they should have a chance to have a say in that but no one should be put in a sentence to a death penalty, i don't find it fair

  21. I personally think that re-instating the death penalty should not be brought back in Canada because as in many cases some prisoners may be innocent and just haven't gotten a fair court trial. I just think it shouldn't be brought ten back. Even tho there's a increase in prisoners and criminals death penalty shouldn't be brought back.

  22. I really think that the death penalty should be brought back because there are these criminals who murder, mutilate and assault women and children and get off with only up to life in prison (escaping possible). With the death sentence being brought back, these people who get assigned to death row will never have the chance to be brought back into society themselves. It will also assure to the people of said society that they will no longer have to worry about this mass criminal.

  23. i strongly believe that the death penalty should not be brought back in Canada. if you do the crime you got to do the time. I understand stand that if someone were to commit a serious and has done something terrible and has takin the life of someone our initial thought is that they should die. instead of killing someone we should keep in prison for a very long time and make them understand that what they have done is terrible and they should be punished. I dont believe that Canada or any other country should have the right to take away the life of someone no matter what they have done.

  24. I believe the death penalty should not be brought back, if you kill someone over the murders they have committed you solve nothing. What if the person was innocent too? It happened back in the day constantly, where innocent people would be hanged because the police couldn't find any other links or clues. Also if we start killing people for murder we become the murderer. In the end I do believe in revenge but killing the person for that revenge is to far. People reading this, if you have the time you should look up the Norwegian imprisonment system. In Norway most prisoners that go into prison don't go back.

  25. I disagree. Like you said many of these people are sick in the head, there is something wrong with them. It is our job to try and help them and prevent another loss to our society. (Which would be them if we killed them)

  26. I believe that the death penalty should not be brought back because its a horrible method, some people would come and watch these like they were shows and would enjoy seeing others suffer. when you are sentenced straight away to death you actually might be innocent but once you hang them its over even if they later find out you are innocent. i really don't think this method of torture should be brought back.
